(Statistics from 2006 Government Report published on May 10, 2007.  1 USD = 7.697 RMB as of May 10, 2007)

Shenyang is one of China's ten largest cities and the capital city of Liaoning province.  It is the industrial center and transportation hub for Northeast China.  It occupies a land area of 12,980 square kilometers (4992 square miles), with 3495 square kilometers (1344 square miles) of urban area.  Shenyang has nine districts (5 urban and 4 suburban) and four counties.  The total population in Shenyang is about 7.4 million in the city and adjoining districts (2006); about 66 percent of its population is urban.  Shenyang is also the largest political, economic, cultural and transportation center of Northeast China.  Its highway network connects with all other 13 municipalities in the province.  The city is planning to build its own subway system.

Shenyang's comprehensive manufacturing base includes non-ferrous metals, chemicals, automobiles, aircraft, machine tools, building materials, electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and light industrial products.

Shenyang's GDP in 2006 was RMB 248.25 billion (USD 32.25 billion), an increase of 16.5 percent over the previous year. The urban citizen’s disposable income per capita is RMB 11,651 (USD 1513.71), increasing 15.4% from 2005. Farmer’s net income per capita is RMB 5712.5 (USD 742.17), increasing 13.1% from 2005.  The Shenyang Municipal Government has set 2010 as a goal to build Shenyang as a national center of equipment manufacturing; as Northeast China's center of commercial and trade logistics; and as the Northeast center of finance.  Shenyang abolished all agricultural taxes by 2005.

The intent is for Shenyang to develop based on its existent industries but with new, better structures.  For example, Tiexi District used to be the most polluted area in Shenyang.  Now its polluted heavy industry plants have moved away, and it has become an attractive area in which some people are now buying houses.  It is a new area of growth in Shenyang.

Shenyang's main foreign traders are from the EU, South Korea, Japan, the U.S. and the DPRK (North Korea).  Shenyang holds annually the China International Equipment Manufacturing Exposition (CIEME) and the ROK (South Korea) Week. The city’s 2006total export volume was USD 5.29 billion, an increase of 16 percent over the previous year.

The city has achieved the titles of the "National Environmental Protection Model City," and was identified as one of China’s most “Economically Dynamic” cities in 2004.  Its Olympics Center will be hosting the 2008 Olympic soccer game.
