Successful MLK and President Obama Inauguration Event

Consular Officer J. Nathan Bland addresses the crowd

On January 21, PAS Shenyang hosted approximately 80 local students and visitors at the Old Consul General’s Residence to celebrate MLK Day, as well as the inauguration of President Barack Obama. They watched Dr. King’s 1963 March on Washington speech (the “I Have a Dream” speech), followed by the swearing-in ceremony of President Obama, while enjoying some of Shenyang’s famous I Love NY pizza and other refreshments.

Consular Officer J. Nathan Bland kicked off the event with remarks describing his own perspective on the inauguration of President Obama and its significance for African-Americans, the nation as a whole, as well as China. In between videos, CG Steve Wickman also spoke briefly about the importance of Dr. King’s speech and impact of the civil rights movement.
